Brief history
The Rock Garden Chandigarh location near Sukhna Lake was meant as a secret location by its founder Nek Chand who based the garden on his vision of the divine kingdom of Sukrani. The Rock Garden is among the most intriguing places to visit in Chandigarh when arriving on cheap last minute flights. In his spare time, Nek Chand would collect all sorts of waste materials from all over the city and build unique sculptures and other structures on this vast, abandoned land deemed infertile. He continued his work in the Rock Garden and it spread to about 12 acres of land interlinked by complex courtyards. Since his work, although brilliant, was illegal, he hid it from the authorities. But they managed to discover his garden in the year 1975. Facing the danger of being demolished owing to its illegal nature, the Rock Garden was spared due to favorable public opinion. The support Nek Chand got was so overwhelming that he was put in charge of the park and given about 50 laborers to work under him on this prestigious project. First opened to the public in the year 1976, this remarkable tourist attraction is today visited by an average 5000 visitors every single day.
